The Goa State Museum which is also known as the State archaeology Museum is one of the largest
museum in Panaji, Goa. The museum was established back in 1977 and was moved to a new building in 1996. Currently, it is located at EDC complexin Patto.
Goa State Museum was initially created by the department of archives in 1973 in a rented building, which later was moved to the new museum complex when it was completed and was inaugurated by the then President of India in 1996.

The Museum has several galleries, fourteen to be exact. The galleries are arranged according to themes.They are: Sculpture Gallery, Printing History Gallery, Contemporary Art Gallery, Banerji Art Gallery, Religious Expression Gallery, Cultural Anthropology,  Natural Heritage of Goa Gallery, Numismatics Gallery, Goa’s Freedom Struggle Gallery, Menezes Braganza Gallery, Christian Art Gallery, Furniture Gallery, Environment & Development Gallery, and Geology Gallery.

The museum has around 8,000 artifacts which represent all regions in India, Similarly there are almost 645 objects which are borrowed from the Institute Menezes Braganza Art Gallery and the Kala Academy. It is one of the best place to visit if you're in Goa. The museum turns itself to a place where one can see a lot of artifacts under one roof as it has properties from all over India.


Timings
Monday - Friday  9:00 AM to 5:00 PM

The main artifacts in the museum are Bronze sculptures from Hinduism and Jainism which were created between 4rth and 8th centuary. The Christian Art Gallery is filled with wooden sculptures of saints and devotional paintings from the colonial period, while the Menezes Braganza Gallery contains paintings and art of the Portuguese governors of and Prime Ministers.
